Over the years, my collection of sewing tools has been enhanced by some lucky mergers and acquisitions…
I discovered some of my favorite go-to sewing tools 50 years ago, including a pair of pinking shears in a carved wooden box tucked in the back of the drawer of the industrial sewing machine in our basement.
(Hint – You can sharpen pinking shears by cutting up a sheet of aluminum foil with them.)
I found sewing tools tangled in with bric-a-brac and buttons in a fancy embossed tin left behind when my father moved from San Diego. I unearthed others wrapped in muslin and tossed into a wrinkled kraft-paper bag on a flea market table.
It was always fun trying to figure out what a tool was for, and sometimes it turned out to be just the right thing to do something else! So now I have a collection of favorite tools that I use almost every day, and I don’t know how I could ever sew without them.
I’d like to share some of the most useful sewing gadgets and gizmos in my collection with my friends who sew, so I assembled a Made By Me! Sewing Tool Kit, that has everything you’ll need to sew the Made By Me! Sewing Lessons and Project Kits. Each tool comes with instructions on how to use it, including hints (like the one above for sharpening pinking shears) that I’ve learned along the way. You’ll learn how to use each tool for what it was designed to do, and also some clever adaptations.

These 14 indispensable tools are included with the complete Made By Me! Sewing Lessons Series and I’m also offering the Sewing Tool Kit by itself. Watch for future blogs where I will discuss these 14 indispensable tools and some of the innovative ways I put them to work in my sewing adventures:
